The short version

Many engineers change direction at some point. The best moves build on what you already know, such as analysis, problem-solving and technical credibility, rather than starting from zero.

Moving into IT

  1. Pick a path where engineering thinking helps: development, testing, data, cloud or technical support.
  2. Learn the basics for 3 to 6 months with a project.
  3. Use domain knowledge as an advantage, for example mechanical knowledge in manufacturing software.
  4. Apply for trainee and associate roles and be ready to start at an entry level.

Moving into management

  1. Take on team leadership, planning and coordination tasks.
  2. Learn costs, scheduling and quality management.
  3. Consider a management programme if you need formal training.
  4. Move into project, operations or product roles.

Moving into government jobs

Engineering posts in government are usually filled through national or state exams and recruitment notices. Check the official notices for eligibility, syllabus, pattern and dates, then build a study plan with regular mock tests. Keep earning and learning while you prepare.

How to decide

  • What work do you enjoy day to day?
  • How much risk and time are you willing to take?
  • Which move uses your existing strengths?
  • Talk to two people already doing the job you want
