Learning Roadmaps: Free Ways to Learn Coding, Networking and Support Skills
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
A realistic way to learn IT skills without spending much: what to learn, in what order, how to practise, and how to avoid tutorial overload.
The short version
You can learn a surprising amount for free: documentation, open courses, practice sites and communities. The limit is rarely money. It is structure, consistency and building real things.
The learning loop that works
- Learn a small concept for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Practise it immediately with an exercise or mini-task.
- Build something small using it.
- Explain it in your own words, aloud or in notes.
- Revisit it a few days later to make it stick.
Coding roadmap
- Pick one language and learn basics, functions and data structures
- Learn Git and the command line
- Learn SQL
- Build two projects and deploy them
- Practise easy interview problems
Networking and support roadmap
- Learn how computers, operating systems and networks work
- Install virtual machines and practise fixing breaks
- Use a free simulator for networking labs
- Learn ticketing and troubleshooting methods
- Write short guides for the issues you solve
Where to find free material
- Official documentation of the tools and languages
- Free open courses and video lectures from universities and communities
- Practice platforms for coding and networking labs
- Open-source projects to read and contribute to
- Local meetups and online communities
Avoiding tutorial overload
Watching videos feels productive but often is not. Follow the rule of one hour of learning to two hours of doing. Finish one course before starting another, and always end a topic with something you built.
