Healthcare BPO Career Growth: From AR Caller to Manager, Coder and Beyond
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 4 min read
How careers progress in healthcare BPOs, the main growth paths, the skills and certifications that help, and the habits that get people promoted.
The usual ladder
Titles differ between companies, but the path is usually like this.
- Trainee or associate: paid training, then supervised work on the floor
- AR caller, biller or analyst: independent work against daily targets
- Senior AR or senior analyst: handles complex claims, escalations and helps new joiners
- Subject-matter expert (SME): the go-to person on a payer, a client or a process
- Team leader: manages a team, targets, quality and attendance
- Assistant manager and manager: runs a process, deals with the client and reports on results
- Senior manager and above: leads a large account, a delivery site or a business unit
Side paths
- Quality analyst: audits work and coaches the team
- Trainer: trains new hires on processes, tools and soft skills
- Medical coding: moves into coding after training and certification
- Denial management and appeals: specialises in complex denials
- Process improvement and analytics: uses data to improve collections and quality
- Client-facing and account roles: works directly with client teams
- Payer-side roles: moves into claims, provider data or benefits configuration
Moving into medical coding
Coding is a common step up because it is more specialised. Coders usually take a structured course and then a recognised certification exam. Requirements, exam bodies and costs vary, so research the options and check which certifications your target employers ask for. Do not pay for guaranteed placement, and be careful of any promise to guarantee a job.
Skills that help you grow
- Strong knowledge of one or two payers or specialities
- Accuracy and clear documentation
- Good communication on calls and in writing
- Understanding of denials, appeals and revenue cycle metrics
- Excel and reporting skills
- Coaching and leadership as you take on responsibility
How to get promoted faster
- Meet your targets and quality scores consistently for several months.
- Learn processes beyond your own task, such as how coding errors cause denials.
- Ask your manager for feedback and a development plan.
- Volunteer to train new joiners or handle escalations.
- Keep a record of your results, such as claims resolved or errors prevented.
- Learn new skills, such as coding, auditing or analytics, and apply for internal openings.
Things to think about
Night shifts and targets can be tiring, so plan your health and routine. The industry is also changing as automation handles simpler tasks, which makes specialised skills such as coding, denial analysis and quality more valuable over time.
Growth by type of role
- Calling roles such as AR: growth comes from resolving harder claims, knowing payers well and then moving to SME, quality, training or team lead
- Desk roles such as billing and payment posting: growth comes from accuracy, speed and learning denial patterns, then moving into denial management or reporting
- Coding roles: growth comes from speciality, setting and auditing skills
- Payer-side roles: growth comes from learning the platform, such as claims, provider data or benefits configuration, and then moving into analysis or configuration
Questions to ask your manager
- What do you expect from me in the next three months?
- How are my accuracy, quality and productivity compared with the team?
- What skills should I build to be considered for the next role?
- Are there openings in quality, training, coding or other teams?
- Can I shadow a senior colleague or take on a small project?
Common plateaus and how to move past them
- Doing the same task for a long time: ask for cross-training in a related task or a second payer
- Hitting targets but not getting promoted: take on mentoring, process improvement or escalation work that others avoid
- Not knowing the next step: speak to people in the roles you want and read their job descriptions
- Feeling worn out by night shifts: plan sleep, meals and exercise, and ask about shift options as you grow
