Network Engineer Jobs Explained: Roles from NOC Engineer to Network Architect
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
A clear map of networking careers: each level, what the work looks like, the skills and certifications that matter, and how to move up.
The short version
Networks are the roads of the digital world. Network engineers design, build and protect them. Demand stays steady because every office, data centre, hospital and bank depends on reliable connectivity.
The career ladder
- NOC (network operations centre) engineer or network support trainee: monitors alerts, follows runbooks and escalates issues.
- Network engineer (L1 or L2): configures switches, routers, Wi-Fi and firewalls, and fixes faults.
- Senior network engineer (L3): designs networks, handles complex outages and leads projects.
- Network architect: plans large networks, chooses technology and sets standards.
- Specialisations: network security, wireless, data centre networking or cloud networking.
A day in a network engineer's life
- Check monitoring dashboards and alerts
- Fix connectivity problems reported by users
- Change configurations through a planned change process
- Upgrade device software during maintenance windows
- Document network diagrams and changes
Skills employers want
- TCP/IP, subnetting, VLANs, routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP
- Switching concepts such as spanning tree and link aggregation
- Firewalls, VPNs, access lists and network security basics
- Wireless networking basics
- Monitoring tools and packet analysis
- Scripting and network automation, increasingly valued
- Cloud networking concepts
Certifications that help
Entry-level networking certifications such as Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are commonly asked for. Check the current requirements and syllabus before you choose, and ask your target employers which one they value.
How to get your first role

- Practise in a free simulator or an emulator with real configuration tasks.
