Procure-to-Pay (P2P) Jobs Explained: The Full Cycle from Purchase Request to Payment
By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
How a company buys goods and services and pays for them, step by step, the roles at each stage, the matching rules, common exceptions and how to start a P2P career.
The short version
Procure-to-pay, usually written P2P, is everything that happens from the moment someone in a company needs to buy something until the supplier is paid. It is one of the biggest sources of finance operations jobs in India, because global companies run their P2P work from shared-service centres here.
The P2P cycle, step by step
Different companies name the steps differently, but the flow is almost always the same.
- Requisition: an employee asks to buy something, such as laptops or office supplies, and a manager approves the request.
- Sourcing and vendor selection: purchasing compares suppliers on price, quality and terms. New suppliers are set up in the vendor master with verified details.
- Purchase order (PO): a formal order is created and sent to the supplier with quantity, price and terms.
- Goods or services received: the warehouse or requester confirms receipt, recorded as a goods receipt note (GRN).
- Invoice received: the supplier sends an invoice, which is captured in the system.
- Matching: the invoice is compared with the PO and the goods receipt. If they agree, the invoice moves forward.
- Approval and posting: the invoice is approved and booked as a liability in the accounts.
- Payment: the company pays on the due date through bank transfer or another method.
- Reporting and reconciliation: payments are reconciled, and reports show spend, ageing and exceptions.
Two-way and three-way match
- Two-way match: invoice is compared with the purchase order
- Three-way match: invoice is compared with the purchase order and the goods receipt
- The match checks price, quantity and sometimes tax. Tolerances decide how small a difference can be approved automatically

- Vendor master data executive: creating and changing supplier records carefully to prevent fraud
