By JobKarle Editorial Team · Published · 2 min read
A friendly guide to testing careers: what testers do, how manual and automation work differ, the skills to build, and how to grow from tester to QA lead.

The short version
Testers are the people who stop bad software from reaching users. It is one of the most accessible ways into IT, especially for non-IT graduates, and it can grow into automation, performance, security or leadership.
What a tester does
- Reads requirements and asks questions about unclear behaviour.
- Designs test cases covering normal use, edge cases and mistakes.
- Runs the tests, records results and logs bugs with clear steps.
- Retests fixes and checks that nothing else broke (regression testing).
- Reports status to the team and helps decide if a release is safe.
Manual vs automation testing
- Manual: a person runs tests by hand. Best for new features, exploring, and usability checks
- Automation: scripts run the tests. Best for repeated checks such as regression and API tests
- Most teams use both, and most roles grow from manual to automation
Skills to build
- Testing basics: test cases, test plans, bug life cycle, types of testing
- Clear bug reports with steps, expected and actual results
- SQL for checking data
- API testing with a tool such as Postman
- Basic programming in Java, Python or JavaScript for automation
- An automation tool such as Selenium, Playwright or Cypress
- A test management and bug tracking tool

- Practise bug reporting on an open demo application.
- Learn SQL queries and API testing.
- Learn a programming language to a basic level.
- Automate three real flows and run them on a schedule.

- What makes a test suitable for automation?
