The short version

Technical customer support combines communication with troubleshooting. You help customers fix problems with internet, devices, software or online services, mostly over calls or chat. Many companies hire freshers and train them.

Voice vs chat support

  • Voice: you speak to customers in real time. Tone, pace and clear explanation matter
  • Chat: you type, often handling more than one conversation. Typing speed and written clarity matter
  • Email: slower, detailed written replies with accurate steps

What you will actually do

  1. Greet the customer and confirm their identity as required.
  2. Ask questions to understand the problem.
  3. Guide them through troubleshooting steps in simple language.
  4. Arrange a repair, replacement or escalation when needed.
  5. Summarise the outcome and record notes in the system.

What recruiters test

  • Spoken English or a Versant-style assessment
  • Typing test for chat roles
  • Basic technical knowledge of devices, Wi-Fi and software
  • Situation questions such as handling a frustrated customer
  • Shift flexibility, especially for international processes

How to prepare

  1. Practise speaking clearly for 15 minutes a day and record yourself.
  2. Learn basics of Windows, mobile phones, routers and common apps.
  3. Learn simple troubleshooting sequences: restart, check cables, check settings, update, reinstall.
  4. Practise explaining a technical fix to a non-technical person.
  5. Prepare answers about handling pressure and difficult customers.

Growth path

Technical associate, then senior associate or subject-matter expert, then team lead or quality analyst. With extra technical skills you can move into L2 support, network operations or cloud support.
