The short version

Every business needs someone to record money coming in and going out. That is accounting. It is one of the most stable fields for commerce graduates, and entry-level roles are open across industries.

Entry-level accounts roles

• Accounts executive or assistant: day-to-day entries, vouchers and records
• Accounts payable (AP) executive: processes supplier invoices and payments
• Accounts receivable (AR) executive: tracks customer invoices and collections
• General ledger (GL) or finance operations associate: maintains the books and month-end tasks
• Billing executive: raises invoices and checks details
• Bank reconciliation executive: matches bank statements with the books
• Audit or taxation trainee in firms

A typical day

1. Receive bills, invoices, bank statements and expense claims.
2. Check them for accuracy and approvals.
3. Enter them in the accounting software with the right account heads.
4. Match payments with invoices and update records.
5. Resolve differences and reply to queries from vendors and teams.
6. Prepare reports and support month-end closing.

Skills employers want

• Basic accounting: debit and credit, ledgers, trial balance
• Tally, SAP or similar software, and strong Excel
• Knowledge of GST and TDS basics
• Accuracy and the habit of checking your work
• Clear communication and deadline discipline
