The short version

A layoff is not a verdict on your ability. It is a business decision. Thousands of capable engineers face it, and most return to strong roles. What matters is how you use the first weeks.

Your first 30 days

  1. Week 1: Take care of essentials: severance paperwork, documents, health cover, budget and a list of fixed costs.
  2. Week 2: Update your resume and profile. Gather references and results from your last role.
  3. Week 3: Tell your network. Message former colleagues, managers and recruiters with a short, specific request.
  4. Week 4: Apply consistently, practise interviews and learn one in-demand skill.

How to explain the gap

Keep it short and factual: My role was impacted when the company reduced the team. Since then I have been updating my skills in cloud and building this project, and I am looking for a role where I can use my backend experience. Do not criticise the previous employer.

Stay interview-ready

  • Practise one coding or design problem a day
  • Keep a document of your achievements and numbers
  • Do mock interviews with friends
  • Keep your profile updated and respond quickly to recruiters

Use the time well

  • Learn a skill that employers ask for in your target roles
  • Build or improve one project
  • Consider contract, freelance or part-time work to bridge the gap
  • Volunteer or contribute to open-source projects

Protect your mind

Keep a routine, exercise, sleep well and talk to people. Job searching is slow and rejections are normal. Set small daily goals, such as two applications and one conversation, instead of judging yourself by the day's outcome.

Beware of scams

Desperate job seekers are targeted. Never pay for interviews, training or placement. Verify the company and recruiter. Read our fake job offer guide.
